Significant Effective Radiative Forcing of Stratospheric Wildfire Smoke

چکیده
The radiative forcing (RF) of volcanic sulfate is well quantified. However, the RF pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb) smoke with absorbing carbonaceous aerosols has not been considered in climate assessment reports. With Community Earth System Model, we studied two record-breaking wildfire events, 2017 Pacific Northwest Event (PNE) and 2019–2020 Australian New Year event (ANY), that perturbed stratospheric chemistry earth's radiation budget. We calculated a global annual-mean effective (ERF) −0.04 ± 0.02 −0.17 W/m2 at top atmosphere (TOA) for PNE ANY, respectively. complexity longwave led to an uncertainty about 50% ERF TOA among models. found modeled from was 70%–270% more negative than mass-equivalent aerosol, highlighting its important role

Radiative forcing of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide: A significant revision of the methane radiative forcing
New calculations of the radiative forcing (RF) are presented for the three main well‐mixed greenhouse gases, methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide. Methane’s RF is particularly impacted because of the inclusion of the shortwave forcing; the 1750–2011 RF is about 25% higher (increasing from 0.48Wm to 0.61Wm) compared to the value in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2013 ...
متن کاملStratospheric sulfur and its implications for radiative forcing simulated by the chemistry climate model EMAC
Multiyear simulations with the atmospheric chemistry general circulation model EMAC with a microphysical modal aerosol module at high vertical resolution demonstrate that the sulfur gases COS and SO2, the latter from low-latitude and midlatitude volcanic eruptions, predominantly control the formation of stratospheric aerosol. Marine dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and other SO2 sources, including strong...
